New York Movies

Hey all,

Was watching "Home at the End of the World" last night (started promising with high death count, a fair amount of sex, wanking and weed but skip the last 45 min of 'happy families' when they move out of NYC...) and I was thinking, I don't think I've ever seen a really really bad movie about New York City.

Woody Allen flicks - good. Die Hard with a Vengeance - v good. Usual Suspects - also v good. Even Splash I thought was good.
My big thought for the day...

I love movies about NYC, too... despite having never been there. Have you seen New York Stories? It's a collection of three short films by Martin Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppola and Woody Allen. They're all very different and good in their own ways, but my favourite is Coppola's "Life Without Zoe," which is gorgeously shot and almost feels magical. I've rented the video several times just to watch this one.

So cool to find another Woody Allen fan! We're thin on the ground these days. I could run the opening credits for Manhattan on a permanent loop on my TV and never get sick of watching.

I really didn't like "home at the end of the world" either. it had a really excellent trailer which lured me to rent it with high hopes. But i was let down. it was Baaaaad. Baaaaaaad. i think it's based on a book, maybe it just didn't translate to film very well.

Hmm, how about "Escape from New York"? Okay, I actually like that, but still. The one thing I will say is that, good or bad, a movie can never do New York justice. It's just that incredible.

How about "Serendipity"? I don't remember it well but I think it might have sucked.

I was only in NYC once, but I had a great time. I even took the subway by myself (a big deal for a California girl!).

Ahh, but you all must remember The Fisher King, another great legend of NYC movies. I must try to get that one on DVD! What is it about NYC that makes a great movie? The grittiness, the possibilities, the range of human experience...

I lived there a year and packed in enough 'life' for a decade. I was trying to break into politics and went to the right xmas party which got me working with the Youth Advisor for the UN 4th World Conference on Women. I lived in Harlem in an amazing but run-down building (marble, intricate hardwood flooring from when H was the weekend destination of the Vanderbilts, etc.), drinking malt liquor on the stoop on weekends. And all the characters I still remember so clearly - Johnnie, the superintendant at the Harlem Library, one of the founders of doo-op and who held jam sessions in the basement. Lord Emperor, rap-god who never was. Misty, the high end prostitute whose wardrobe alone was worth $100K but who used to dress me if I was going out clubbing.

Everyone had a story - the mix of tragedy and human goodness - that most NYC movies tend to portray. I was so glad to leave and get back to life in Canada!

Wow, Kris - living in Harlem eh? That's just too fuckin' cool. My best friend lives in Manhattan and I spent the most fantastic week there for my 30th bday. I also rode the subway on my own and just walked and walked all week... What a great experience to have part of your life story...
