Happy International Women's Day

Here's a post I wrote on my conflicted feelings, this IWD. I'm especially curious in how my Canadian sisters are feeling about these issues.

    Thanks Landismom!

I totally agree - so little progress on such important issues! While some things are better up here in Canada (our parental leave can be taken by either parent for 1 year at about 55% of your salary paid by EI), its still shocking how far behind things are.

On some of the medical/science grants I work on, there are no co-investigators who are women. There are no senior female partners at my husband's law firm and when he asked to have work 4 days/week, his boss said how awkard he felt that was, saying it was similar to when another colleague was having an affair in the office. Like, what???

Its good to take stock like in this posting Landismom! With the US Supreme Court being packed with right wingers, I get really scared for women's rights... there's going to be an underground railroad of women coming to Canada to exercise reproductive rights.

And what kills me is that Bush's approval rating is an all time low because of the proposed sale of a couple of ports! Like, what??? Crazy world, hundreds of thousands dead and $1-2 Trillion on a useless war caused his popularity to skyrocket. And we now have a Prime Minister who would have sent Canadian troops there too! Ack!

Oh, man, don't even get me started on how depressing I find our current (minority, thank god for small blessings) government. It's so demoralizing knowing that there's this powerful cadre of people who are waiting and watching for any opportunity to repeal so many hard-won rights, not just for women but for gays, children, and lower-income people. Man.
